You don’t want to be that person who’s headed back to the store for the umpteenth time to get yet another thing that you need for your new tiled space, while your tiler stands idle and waits for you. Or worse, nothing happens because you’re at work and can’t get to the shop for that much needed item.

So, bearing that in mind, we’ve put together this quick reference checklist of the top 7 things you need to remember when buying tiles.

1. Tiles

Obvs! Just make sure that you have enough for the whole space plus an extra 10% for cutting, mishaps and for spares left over to keep for future repairs that you may need. If you’ve chosen to have a diagonal layout, up that 20% extra. Use our tile calculator if you’re not sure how much you need.

2. Tile adhesive

Porcelain tiles need a different adhesive to what you’d use for ceramics and mosaics a different one again. Check with your tiler, or a Design Adviser in store about which one is the right choice for your tiles. They can also advise on how much you need. You don’t want to rushing back for bags of adhesive halfway through tiling your new lounge, now do you?

3. Grout

Once you’ve chosen your tile and the grout colour, use the handy grout calculator from TAL to work out how much you need for your space.

4. Additives

If you’re tiling upstairs or in your bathroom, there are additives you should be putting into your adhesive and grout to make it water resistant and flexible. Ask in-store for advice on this.

5. Trims and edging

Keep corners neat, edges clean and the look crisp and beautiful.

6. Tile spacers

Check that your tiler is going to supply these, otherwise make sure you have some on your shopping list. Spacers keep the lines between the tiles on the straight and true for perfect results.

7. Tiling tools

If you’re taking on a DIY tiling project, we’ve got a selection of tools for you to get it done. No stress!
